Abstract :

Chyavanaprasam, a household remedy all over India, is popular for its nutritional value. In ayurveda, Chyavanaprasam is classified under the category of Rasayana, which aims at maintaining physique, vigor and vitality, while delaying the ageing process. In the present study, it was aimed to study extractive values, moisture content, ash values, oraganoleptic characteristics, pH and total phenolic and flavonoids content can be efficiently used for standardization most popular herbal preparation Chyavanaprasam. Methanolic extract of all samples of Chyavanaprasam with in-house formulation were prepared for one brand was defatted with hexane (100 ml) and then with chloroform (100 ml) using three successive cycles for each solvent. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of these Chyavanaprasam extracts were determined. Chyavanaprasam extracts may be used as a good anti-bacterial substitute to Gentamycin.
